Green Square isn’t a typical suburb page for us. The town centre district sits around Zetland, about 4 km south of the Sydney CBD in the City of Sydney area, and the wider catchment takes in parts of Waterloo, Alexandria and Rosebery too. It’s medium to high density housing, not streets of freestanding homes, and the renewal is planned to deliver more than 30,000 dwellings for around 61,000 residents by 2030.
That changes the job. In a unit, the pipework is usually concealed, shared with other apartments, and the first sign of trouble often shows up somewhere you don’t own. New towers, old drainage lines
The buildings around Green Square Station, the library and Gunyama Park are new. A lot of what runs under the ground isn’t. Much of the Green Square catchment was developed between 1912 and 1920 and was fully built out by the 1940s, with most of the subsurface drainage estimated to date from before the 1930s.
On the older streets around the edges of the precinct, that means clay sewer lines, root intrusion, and drains carrying far more load than they were built for. In the newer blocks you get different problems: long horizontal runs, tight risers, and blockages that affect several apartments at once. Both need a proper diagnosis rather than a jet down the pipe and a guess.
Heavy rain and drains that back up
The area was once a network of wetlands and creeks, essentially a floodplain, and paving over it cut natural drainage dramatically. Flood trouble has historically come from limited drainage capacity and water ponding in low points like Joynton Avenue, Lachlan Street, South Dowling Street and Botany Road. The City of Sydney and Sydney Water built a stormwater drain of more than 2 km from Zetland to the Alexandra Canal, which has cut the threat of high-level flooding. Public drainage is one thing. Your own line is another. If a courtyard grate, basement drain or laundry floor waste backs up every time there’s a decent downpour, that’s usually a blockage or a damaged private line, and it won’t improve on its own. Worth sorting before the next storm, not during it.

That’s exactly when a camera earns its keep. A CCTV drain inspection shows the inside of the pipe, so we can see roots, a crack, or a belly in the line instead of clearing the same blockage every few months.
